What Benson and James each need in Michigan

In a tied Michigan governor's race Macomb County would lean Republican by 5 points and Kent County would split even. Benson leads the RCP average by 7.7.

By ·

Macomb County gave Gretchen Whitmer a 5.2-point margin in Michigan’s 2022 governor’s race, 5.3 points short of her 10.5-point statewide margin. Suppose every county moves by the same number of points between that race and Tuesday’s race between Jocelyn Benson and John James. A tied race would then show Macomb leaning Republican by about 5 points. A Macomb count near even would put Benson on course for a statewide win of about 5.

That arithmetic, a uniform swing from 2022, is an assumption, since counties moved by different amounts between 2018 and 2022. It gives every county a tied-race margin: its 2022 margin minus the state’s. Each county’s 2018-to-2022 lean records how much further it moved toward the Democrat than the state did between the two governor’s races.

The state of the race

Whitmer is term-limited, so the seat is open. Benson, the secretary of state, won the Aug. 4 Democratic primary with 83.2 percent over Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, according to Wikipedia’s page on the race. James, a U.S. representative endorsed by Donald Trump, won the Republican primary with 50.1 percent over Perry Johnson, the page says. The RealClearPolling average of eight polls taken Oct. 15 to Nov. 1 has Benson at 51.0 and James at 43.3. That is a lead of 7.7 points, and RCP rates the race Leans Dem, moved from Toss Up on Aug. 13. The ratings table on the Wikipedia page lists Cook Political Report and Inside Elections at Lean D as of Oct. 29. It lists Sabato’s Crystal Ball at Likely D as of Oct. 27.

What Benson needs

Wayne and Oakland counties cast 28.6 percent of Michigan’s 2022 vote between them. Wayne gave Whitmer 42.9 points and in a tied race would give Benson 32.4; Oakland gave Whitmer 23.1 and would give Benson 12.6. At the RCP average those margins are 40.1 in Wayne and 20.3 in Oakland. Kent County, 6.7 percent of the vote, gave Whitmer 10.2 and sits at minus 0.3 in a tied race. Under uniform swing, a Kent count on the Democratic side of even would put Benson ahead statewide. Washtenaw, Ingham and Genesee fill out the Democratic column, at 41.0, 29.4 and 8.2 in a tied race.

Oakland moved 5.2 points further toward the Democrat than Michigan did between 2018 and 2022, and Kent moved 5.1. Wayne moved 1.1 points less than the state. If those leans repeat, an Oakland margin in the high teens would be consistent with a close race statewide, and a Wayne margin near 32 would read as about even.

What James needs

James’s path runs through the 75 counties outside the top eight, which cast 42.3 percent of the 2022 vote and gave Whitmer’s opponent, Tudor Dixon, a 7.9-point edge. In a tied race that block lands at minus 18.4, and at the RCP average it lands at minus 10.7. Ottawa County, 3.3 percent of the vote, went 18.0 points Republican in 2022 and would need to reach minus 28.5 in a tied race. Ottawa moved 4.6 points further toward the Democrat than the state did between 2018 and 2022, which works against that number. Macomb at minus 5.3 and Kent at minus 0.3 are the two large counties where James needs the count on his side. At the RCP average both stay with Benson, Macomb at 2.4 and Kent at 7.4.

Notes and sources

Margins are the Democrat’s share minus the Republican’s, in points. The tied-race margin is the county’s 2022 margin minus the statewide 2022 margin of 10.51; the margin at the RCP average adds the 7.7-point lead to the tied-race margin. The 2018-to-2022 lean is how much further toward the Democrat the county moved than the state did between the two governor’s races.
